Dear Falcon Football Parents:
In 2007 we began hosting the senior members of the Ritsumeikan Uji High School football team from Kyoto, Japan, as they traveled to Torrey Pines to learn more about American football, and the English language. We are pleased to announce that the Panther players and coaches are returning again in August, but this year we have been forced to use Cathedral Catholic because the school district raised the cost of using TPHS to something our visitors could not afford. Because the two schools are so close to each other it just seems right to offer our Falcon families the opportunity to host these very special young men, beginning Saturday, August 3, and ending Thursday, August 15. This is truly a very unique experience, and I don’t want our TPHS players to miss out just because the district has changed its policies regarding field usage. I promise you, this is an opportunity to meet and be exposed to student athletes that will remain a part of your family for the rest of your life. Without exception, you will meet and get close to a polite, bright, and grateful teenager that will win your heart, and expose you to a very warm and welcoming culture. You will be asked to provide housing, meals, and transportation to and from Cathedral Catholic High School each day that they are here. You will be expected to provide them with three meals a day, including a sack lunch on school days. You will receive a $15 a day stipend for each boy that stays with you to help offset your expenses. Some families have the room, and prefer to house two players. In all of our previous years we have never had a negative incident, and the trip usually ends with the team loading onto the bus with 20 sobbing boys looking out at 20 American’s in total tears. Many of our previous host families are still in touch with the student who stayed with them, and some have used the experience to visit their guest at his home in Japan. I love Torrey Pines High School and the football program Coach Gladnick has built, and believe me I would not be asking you to do something that I thought would be a negative experience for a member of the Falcon Football family.
